The Ægishjálmur, which translates to "helmet of fear" or "helm of terror" in Old Norwegian, is an ancient magical symbol that was believed to instill fear in enemies and protect against negative forces. Vikings who wore this symbol as jewelry or as a tattoo knew that they were shielded from any challenges that life may bring. The Ægishjálmur is referenced in old sagas, including the Völsunga saga, where the dragon Fafnir is said to have worn one between his eyes. A runic stone in Swedish Uppland, dating back to around the year 1000, depicts scenes from the Völsunga saga that feature the Ægishjálmur.
