Holmgang was a Viking ritual duel that was mainly used to settle disputes between two individuals. The word "Holmgang" literally means "Island Walk," and it involved the two parties fighting on a small, isolated island or any other designated area.
The rules of the Holmgang were simple: the two parties would agree on the weapons to be used, and the fight would continue until one of the combatants was killed or surrendered. The duel was usually fought to the death, and there were no rules against using dirty tactics or tricks to gain an advantage.
